Balcony breaks at Mexican resort, woman on honeymoon killed

TULUN, Mexico, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman, just married and on her honeymoon in Mexico, died in a fall when a hotel balcony railing collapsed, her husband's mother confirmed.

Shannon Amy Guy and Paul Guy of Carlton Place, Ontario, near Ottawa, married Aug. 2 after living together for several years. The couple's two daughters are 7 months and 3 years old, said Darlene Guy, Paul Guy's mother.

Their honeymoon began Tuesday with a trip to a resort hotel in Tulum, Mexico, near Cancun, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Paul Guy was taking photographs of his bride Wednesday, and of another Canadian couple they met at the resort, when a glass panel on a balcony railing on which they were leaning broke. All four fell to the ground. Shannon Amy Guy was killed and the other three victims were injured, CBC said.

Darlene Guy said her son, phoning her from a hospital intensive care unit in Tulum, is distraught over the incident.

A spokesman for the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development said Canadian consular officials "are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information" about the incident.
