Father drowns while trying to save two sons

ODAWARA, Japan, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A Japanese man drowned after he jumped into the ocean to save his two sons who had slipped off rocks into the water Sunday morning.

Atsushi Oka, 32, was fishing with his two sons, aged 9 and 5, near Odawara in Kanagawa prefecture Sunday morning when the two boys fell into the water, Japan Today reported.

Witnesses said Oka jumped in the water after the boys. The 5-year-old boy was helped out of the water by another fisherman, while the 9-year-old managed to get out by himself.

Oka was pulled from the water about an hour later, police said.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
