Power, water being restored to east Chinese city after flooding

YUYAO, China, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- The city of Yuyao, China, was recovering Thursday after experiencing massive flooding from Typhoon Fitow, authorities said.

More than 70 percent of the downtown area was flooded Wednesday, and in some areas, the water level is still more than three-feet deep, authorities said.

Power and transportation are being restored in the city, and the water level is beginning to drop, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The flood water won't recede fully until Saturday due to poor drainage, authorities said, but forecasts indicate that there will be no rain until at least Monday.

More than 830,000 people from 21 townships were affected by the flooding, which occurred Wednesday.

On Thursday, the gas supply was fully restored and 80 percent of water supplies were back in service.

Fifteen bus routes in the city also resumed operation.

Food and water is being supplied to those staying in temporary shelters, Xinhua said.
