DHAKA, Bangladesh, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A war crimes tribunal found former Bangladesh minister Abdul Alim guilty of large-scale war crimes Wednesday and sentenced him to life in prison.
Alim, 83, of the Bangladesh National Party, was found guilty of genocide for killings during the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan, Bdnews24.com.
The conviction marks the eighth verdict against alleged Pakistani collaborators for their crimes.
The judges' summary verdict stated that Alim committed murder, genocide, looting, arson, abduction and torture with the help of Pakistani troops during the war.
Alim was spared the death penalty because of his health and age, the judges said.
Veterans from the independence war and youth protesters celebrated the verdict on the streets of Dhaka, Bdnews.com reported.
