Canadians held in Egypt released from jail but must stay in country

CAIRO, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Two Canadian men arrested during anti-government demonstrations in Egypt were not permitted leave Egypt after their release from jail, the partner of one said.

John Greyson, a filmmaker and professor at Toronto's York University, and Dr. Tarek Loubani of London, Ontario, were released from prison last weekend after being held without charge for seven weeks, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

They were prevented from boarding a flight to Frankfurt, Germany, Sunday, because their names were on a "stop list," an inclusion Greyson's partner Stephen Andrews called a "bureaucratic glitch."

Andrews added Greyson and Loubani were free to retrieve their luggage and leave the airport.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said they may not leave the country, pending an investigation into ongoing charges against all the arrested demonstrators.

The two were arrested Aug. 16 during violent demonstrations in Egypt, and the CBC reported they would have to wait to leave the country until charges for all 600 protesters arrested with them are decided.

The surprise news the men had been released from prison, even though they must stay in Egypt, brought "a sense of relief," Andrews said.

Loubani was in the country to train doctors, and Greyson to observe and document his work, the CBC said.
