Russia bans adoptions by Sweden

MOSCOW, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Russian has banned Swedish couples from adopting Russian children over legalized same-sex marriage in Sweden.

The move is in accordance with a law that President Vladimir Putin signed in June that bans "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors," TheLocal.se reported.

On Thursday, Russian and Swedish authorities met to discuss the situation. The Swedish Foreign Ministry said that so far, no negotiations on an agreement that would allow heterosexual Swedish couples to adopt Russian children have taken place.

Meanwhile, Russian politician Vitaly Milonov called homosexuals "perverts" in an interview with Sveriges Television.

Milonov said he believes Russian children would be better off at orphanages than in homes with gay parents.

"The perverts? No, it is unacceptable. Homosexuals are 'perverts' and should absolutely not be allowed to adopt children," Milonov said. "Children who grow up in that kind of environment are destroyed psychologically."
