TEHRAN, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Iran's Revolutionary Guards issued a statement Thursday denying one of its officers had been assassinated but said it would investigate.
The statement referred to reports by the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph Wednesday saying Mojtaba Ahmadi, head of the Revolutionary Guards cyber warfare unit, had been assassinated, his body discovered in woods near Tehran Monday.
The Revolutionary Guards website Sepha News quoted Army Public Affairs Imam Hassan as denying the report.
The statement said the Revolutionary Guards plan to investigate the report and will "announce through the official channels" its findings once the investigation is completed.
The Telegraph said Ahmadi, who served as the commander of the Cyber War Headquarters, was found dead in a wooded area near Karaj, northwest of Tehran. The report said Ahmadi was last seen leaving his home heading for work Saturday and had been shot twice in the heart, citing details published in the Alborz, another website linked to the Revolutionary Guards.
The paper said a local police commander said two people on a motorbike were believed to have been involved in the assassination.
Since 2007, five Iranian nuclear scientists and the head of the country's ballistic missile program have been killed, the Telegraph said.
