Nixon announced that the state of Missouri will apply for nearly $1 billion in newly available federal railroad funds. The application will include a two-phase proposal: immediate upgrades to improve speeds and schedule reliability along existing rail lines between St. Louis and Kansas City; and longer-term design, engineering and preparation for construction of a separate, dedicated high-speed line between the two cities. The immediate upgrades would create more than 1,300 jobs in Missouri over the next few years. UPI/Bill Greenblatt

ZAPOROZHYE, Ukraine, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- An impromptu fling on a railroad track in Ukraine proved deadly deadly for a couple that was run over by a train, police said.

A woman was killed and her boyfriend lost his legs when they were struck by a switcher locomotive while having sex on the tracks early Saturday.

The Ukraine Interior Ministry said in a written statement that the man told police in Zaporozhye they had "failed to overcome their natural passion when walking home ... and wanted to experience an extreme sensation near the railroad tracks."

RIA Novosti said the ministry did not release the names of the 41-year-old man and his "thirty-something" companion.
