Lawyers petition for transfer of ailing crime boss

ROME, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Lawyers for an aging Sicilian mafia boss said they have petitioned a court to move their client from prison to a hospital because he's in failing health.

Bernardo Provenzano, 80, known as the "Godfather of the Sicilian mafia," is suffering from Parkinson's disease and is at an advanced enough stage where he doesn't recognize visitors or family, TheLocal.it said.

Provenzano was captured near his birthplace, Corleone, Sicily, in 2003 -- after 43 years on the run.

Provenzano's birth place is also the namesake for the Corleono family in filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola's "Godfather" trilogy.
