STUTTGART, Germany, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- A 93-year-old man accused of being a former guard at the Auschwitz death camp during World War II was charged with murder, German prosecutors said Thursday.
Although prosecutors did not name him, German media said Hans Lipschis is the same man who was deported from the United States in the 1980s for lying about his membership in the Nazi SS. He was arrested in May and charged with complicity to murder, prosecutors in Stuttgart said in a statement Thursday.
The man is alleged "to have supported the operation of the camp and thereby the extermination activities" between 1941 and 1943, the statement said.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was a death camp that operated in occupied Poland from 1940 until January 1945. More than a million people, mostly European Jews, Roma and Poles, perished there.
Expatica said Lipschis in the past claimed he worked as a cook at Auschwitz.
He emigrated to the United States in 1956, settling in Chicago, and was denied U.S. citizenship in 1982 for failing to disclose his Nazi past. He was deported to Germany.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center this year listed Lipschis No. 4 on a list of most-wanted Nazi-era war criminals.
