Council: People who make false charges of blasphemy should be executed

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Anyone convicted of making false charges of blasphemy would be put to death under a proposal a Pakistan legal advisory group said it would consider Thursday.

If approved by the Council of Islamic Ideology, the penalty would be the same as for people accused of blasphemy, The Express Tribune reported.

"If made part of the law, this provision will discourage people from using blasphemy laws for settling personal scores," said council member Allama Tahir Ashrati.

Most members of the council agreed to recommend the change at a Wednesday meeting of the CII, Ashrati said.

The change has long been sought by civil society groups to discourage false accusations of blasphemy, he said.

The council is a constitutional body that advises Pakistani lawmakers on whether laws are repugnant to Islam.
