BEIJING, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A verdict in the corruption trial of Bo Xilai, a former senior member of the Chinese Communist Party, will be announced Sunday, the trial court said Wednesday.
If he is convicted, prosecutors are demanding a heavy sentence, said Xinhua, China's official news service.
Bo, a former member of the Chinese politburo, is charged with bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power. His trial at the Jinan Intermediate People's Court in August lasted five days.
He denied most of the charges, Xinhua said.
Prosecutors had argued for a lengthy sentence for the 64-year-old Bo in their closing statements in August, saying he had committed serious crimes and had refused to plead guilty.
Bo was quoted as saying in his final statement he was proud of the way the trial was conducted.
"During the trial, both prosecution and defense sides had opportunities to fully express their opinions," Bo said. "Also, the court released trial transcripts through microblog. All of these have made me more confident of the future of China's judicial system."
