OTTAWA, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Six people were killed and 30 injured Wednesday in a collision between a Via Rail train and an Ottawa city bus, Canadian authorities said.
The double-decker Ottawa Carlton Transpo bus was heading north on the Transitway when it collided with a Via Rail train 51 at a ground rail crossing, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. At least 30 people were injured, 11 hospitalized in critical condition, the CBC said.
A passenger aboard the double-decker bus said it crashed "head-on" into the train. The front of the bus was sheared off by the impact and the train derailed down the track.
"We had bodies and debris pretty much everywhere at the impact site," an Ottawa fire services official told CTV News.
The CBC said witnesses indicated the bus driver apparently failed to stop at the rail crossing despite warning signals. No injuries were reported aboard the train, which was headed from Ottawa to Toronto.
Investigators from Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board were at the scene of the collision in south Ottawa.
