Election official shot, killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Gunmen in northern Afghanistan Wednesday shot and killed the election commission chief of Kunduz province, local police said.

Gen. Ibadullah Talwar, the provincial security chief, said the gunmen riding motorcycles killed Amanullah Aman as he was going to work, Khaama Press reported. Talwar said Aman was taken to a hospital where he died.

The attackers fled the area.

The report said there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shooting.

Insurgent violence in Afghanistan has escalated as the country prepares for presidential elections next April. Officials admit security would be a major challenge at the time.

Additionally, all U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan are scheduled to leave by the end of next year.
