His wife, Catherine Au Yuk-shan, 41, was sentenced to five and a half years in jail.

The couple were convicted of assault causing bodily harm for systematically abusing Kartika Puspitasari, who had been their maid for two years.

The couple burned her with an iron, beat her with a bike chain and assaulted her with a paper cutter, the Hong Kong Standard reported.

The judge found the couple not guilty of imprisonment amid allegations they tied her to a chair, made her wear a diaper and left her alone during their five-day vacation.

Puspitasari escaped from the house last October, and the couple were arrested three days later.

The courtroom was packed with human rights advocates Wednesday, and protesters outside the court held signs that said "Mr. and Mrs. Evil," the Standard reported.
