TOYOHASHI, Japan, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Three people were confirmed dead and four missing in a typhoon that stuck central and northeast Honshu in Japan Monday, police said.
The typhoon, called "Typhoon Man-yi" or "Typhoon No. 18," struck the main Japanese island Monday, and prompted evacuation orders for more than 500,000 people, officials said.
The storm made landfall near Toyohashi and moved along Honshu throughout the day, damaging buildings, disrupting transportation and causing power outages, the newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported.
Landslides killed two women, in Shiga and Kukui prefectures, and an Iwate prefecture man fell from a ladder as he attempted to close a window, the newspaper said.
Officials recovered the body of a 71-year-old woman from her house in Ritto that was destroyed in a landslide, officials said. Her grandson, living with her, was unharmed.
The area of impact included Fukushima prefecture and its troubled nuclear reactor, where radioactive water was discharged to prevent the complex from flooding, Kyodo News reported.
Concern about the Yamatogawa River possibly flooding prompted the Osaka city government to issue an evacuation advisory for about 300,000 people in 131,000 households.
Sakai city officials recommended 42,000 people in 19,400 households be evacuated.
The typhoon knocked out power to 32,040 households in eight prefectures, Kansai Electric Power Co. officials said.
Railway transportation was disrupted or suspended, Asahi Shimbun reported.
The Transportation Ministry said at least 360 incoming and departing flights at Haneda Airport in Tokyo were canceled.
