JERUSALEM, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- The true test of the U.S.-Russian deal to have Syria dismantle its chemical weapons is in its implementation, a senior Israeli government official said.
"The arrangement with Syria is good for Israel, but the test will be in its implementation," Avigdor Lieberman, the former Israeli foreign minister and chairman of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, told Army Radio Sunday morning.
"The test has been performed and Assad has a very problematic record in every subject of reliability and good intentions. Only recently he was still denying that Syria held chemical weapons," Lieberman said.
Under the Geneva agreement drawn up Saturday, Syrian President Bashar Assad is required to hand over a map detailing the locations of the country's chemical weapons stash by next week.
"We will be able to verify or understand what Assad's intentions are in another week," Lieberman said. "Israel has a pretty darn good idea of what Assad has and doesn't have."
