Colombia police arrest Canadian for drugs in fake pregnant belly

BOGOTA, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A 28-year-old Canadian woman was arrested in Colombia for allegedly trying to smuggle 4.4 pounds of cocaine inside a fake pregnant belly, police said.

Anti-narcotics police in Bogota's El Dorado airport stopped Ritchie Tabatha Leah because she was behaving strangely, news website Semana reported Wednesday.

"[She] assured us that she was seven months pregnant," said Colonel Esteban Arias Melo, the sub director of the anti-narcotics police. "And she was getting aggressive, allowing us to confirm ... that her pregnancy was in fact an elaborate latex belly, easy to stick to her back."

Police said the latex belly contained two bags of cocaine, worth about $58,000, Colombia Reports said.

Leah had been in Colombia since Aug. 6, saying she was visiting friends. She was trying to catch a plane back to Toronto.
