Berlin court to rule whether transgender man can be listed as father

BERLIN, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- A transgender person who gave birth to a boy in Germany is fighting to be recognized as the child's father, rather than his mother, court documents indicate.

The unidentified Berlin man was born a woman, but has identified himself as a man and has undergone hormonal treatment.

He still has female reproductive organs, and gave birth to a child on April 11 after becoming pregnant with a sperm donation, The Local.de reported.

The hospital, which requires a mother be listed in birth documents, have listed the man as a mother, while the man claims the baby has no mother.

A Berlin family court will now decide whether he can be registered as the father of the baby, The Local.de reported.

In 2011, German law was changed to allow transgender people who have not undergone a full sex change to identify themselves as members of the opposite sex in official documents.
