MOSCOW, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A native of Kazakhstan convicted of planning to kill Russian President Vladimir Putin was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison.
Ilya Pyanzin was sentenced in Moscow City Court, RAPSI, the Russian legal information agency, reported. Pyanzin is to serve his sentence in a maximum-security prison camp.
Pyanzin worked out a plea agreement with prosecutors, ITAR-Tass news said. The agreement called for a term no more than two-thirds of the maximum.
Ukrainian police arrested Pyanzin and Adam Osnayev, a Chechen, after an explosion in 2012 in Odessa. Investigators determined the blast, which killed a third man, Chechen Ruslan Madayev, was from a homemade bomb.
Pyanzin was extradited to Russia, while Osnayev is still being held in Ukraine pending a European court hearing on his extradition.
Pyanzin told prosecutors the three, acting at the instructions of a terrorist group, planned to kill Putin by bombing his motorcade. He also gave details about a 2007 attempt on the life of Ramzan Kadyrov, president of the Russian Republic of Chechnya, prosecutors said.
"Pyanzin adhered to the terms of the pre-trial settlement. He also helped solve another crime. The law enforcers are now taking procedural measures against those involved in the later plot," Judge Aleksandr Zamashyuk said.
