It was Zarif's first official visit to a foreign government since Hassan Rouhani was sworn in this summer as president of Iran.

The details of Zarif's agenda were not revealed. The Iranian Fars News Agency said Zarif and the Iraqi officials discussed regional issues and the economic ties between the two nations.
