Poachers use poison to kill 41 elephants in Zimbabwe

MATABELELAND NORTH, Zimbabwe, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Poachers in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park used poison to kill 41 elephants, an official said.

Five suspected poachers were arrested, said Zimbabwe Parks spokeswoman Caroline Washaya Moyo, who added the investigation suggests cyanide was used to kill the animals.

There has been an increase in killings of elephants and rhinos in Africa in recent years, to meet a demand in Asia for horns and tusks used in traditional medicine in parts of Asia, the British Broadcasting Corporation said Friday.

Moyo said touching the poisoned carcasses posed a danger to humans and animals.
