HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- A Saint Mary's University freshmen orientation chant about sex with underage girls was called "disturbing" by the Halifax, Nova Scotia, school's president.
The 15-second chant, posted on YouTube and viewed by United Press International, spells out the word "young," and includes the lines, "SMU boys we like them young. Y is for your sister. O is for oh so tight. U is for underage. N is for no consent. G is for grab that ass."
Saint Mary's President Colin Dodds called the student leaders' behavior inexcusable and said the administration would conduct a special review to find out how the incident came to pass, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday.
"My colleagues and I were shocked by this incident and are deeply sorry that our students, and now the community at large, were exposed to disturbing sexually charged material," Dodd said.
Eighty of the student leaders have been ordered to undergo sensitivity training and campus events were canceled Wednesday evening so staff could meet with the orientation leaders, the CBC said.
"There is not, and has never been, any place for this sort of culture on our university campuses," Jonathan Williams, executive director of Students Nova Scotia, said. "While the SMU students involved surely failed to grasp the severity of what they were doing and saying, this very fact highlights the need to speak out about sexism when we see it."
Jared Perry, president of the school's student orientation, called the students involved "great leaders" who exhibited a "simply a lack of judgment."
"I definitely agree that's not appropriate. It's not tasteful, and I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been offended," Perry said.
The CBC said Perry said the chant had been used in previous years, as well.
