Israeli official gives bad review to gas mask program

JERUSALEM, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- An Israeli official says the recent glitches in the distribution of gas masks were the result of systemic problems.

State Comptroller Joseph Shapira said in an open letter Sunday the rules for the gas mask program were flawed and in many cases denied masks to foreign workers.

Shapira said other inefficiencies caused shortages of masks left many Israeli citizens stuck in long lines in the aftermath of the deadly gas attack inside Syria.

The Jerusalem Post said Shapira said separately the government's "Nativ" program, which assimilates immigrants into Israeli society, was ignoring its responsibilities and disregarding rules on financial transparency.
