STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A hazing scandal has prompted the temporary closing of the alma mater of Sweden's Prince Carl Philip and other members of Swedish high society, officials said.
The move came after reports that two students at the prestigious Lundsbergs boarding school in Varmland were burned with an iron during a hazing ritual, the Swedish news agency TT reported Wednesday.
Earlier reports of student hazing involved oral sex, eating manure and burning nipples with an electric fly swatter.
Ann-Marie Begler, general director of Sweden's School Inspectorate, said temporary closure could be the death knell for the elite institution.
"It's very sad that so shortly after our inspection, and a few days after the students returned to school, such serious incidents have taken place," Begler told TT.
The inspectorate has also informed the Swedish government that it should consider withdrawing the school's state funding.
Founded in 1896, Lundsbergs has an enrollment of approximately 200 students and follows the British boarding school tradition.
