Human Rights Watch says nine arrested in Bahraini anti-regime protests

MANAMA, Bahrain, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Police in Bahrain used teargas and stun grenades Monday to break up anti-regime protests in several parts of the island country, a human rights activist said.

Yousef al-Muhafazah, head of Bahrain's Human Rights Watch, said nine people were arrested, Iran's FARS news agency reported.

Protests calling for the country's monarch, Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, to step down have been ongoing since February 2011.

Saudi-led security forces from the Gulf Cooperation Council entered Bahrain in March 2011 to help put down the demonstrations.

Thousands of protesters are reported to have been injured in clashes with the security forces, while hundreds are said to be missing.
