Sappers dispose of WWII shell in Moscow park

MOSCOW, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Moscow police said they called in the bomb squad Sunday after an artillery shell dating back to World War II was found in a city park.

The discovery was reported by security guards at a pier in the Fili park along the Moscow River, police told Russia's RIA Novosti news agency.

"The ordnance was identified as a heavily corroded World War II shell with the detonator," police said.

The discovery came a few months after last fall's discovery of a similar shell in the Moscow River near the village of Metrostroi. The Moscow area was the scene of fierce fighting between Soviet and German forces during the war.
