A Muslim resident who witnessed the incident said members of the mob threw stones at the mosque when worshipers were praying.

Several nearby homes also were damaged in the violence and two police officers were among the five injured.

Buddhist groups have mounted a campaign against Muslims and Christians in Sri Lanka in recent months. Last month, a group of Buddhist monks protested near the mosque, demanding it be relocated.
