Spanish town to name street after former British prime minister

CANDELEDA, Spain, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A street in Candeleda, Spain, will be named after former British Conservative Prime Minister John Major, officials said.

Major first visited the town, which is located in Spain's northwestern Castilla y Leon region, when he was on a vacation after he became head of the Conservative party in late 1990, ThinkSpain reported.

The former prime minister then began regularly visiting the town, staying with friends who live there.

Rodrigo Munoz, spokesman for Candeleda's PP council, said the town decided to name a street after Major to promote foreign tourism.

"He clearly likes it here and we're delighted to welcome him -- I've enjoyed a beer with him in the town hall square the last few times he was here," Munoz said. "He seems a pleasant and very grounded man and, although he doesn't speak Spanish, he knows how to say a few words."

Major said he was "touched and honored" by the town's gesture.
