As many as 5 militants killed in Sinai blasts

CAIRO, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Two explosions in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula killed as many as five suspected militants, officials said.

The blasts happened Friday near Egypt's border with Israel, The New York Times reported. Circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

Unnamed Egyptian security officials were quoted by local media as saying the explosions were the result of an Israeli missile strike, possibly launched from a remotely piloted drone.

Israel has not commented on the incident,

Egyptian army spokesman Col. Ahmed Ali said armed forces were combing the area to determine what happened.

"The claims of coordination between the Egyptian and Israeli sides in this matter are totally lacking in truth and go against sense and logic," Ali said.
