Israel inaugurates water desalination plant in Cyprus

LIMASSOL, Cyprus, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Israel's national water carrier Mekorot inaugurated a desalination plant on Cyprus able to produce some 40,000 cubic meters of water daily, officials said.

It is the fifth desalination plant on Cyprus.

"The existing old desalination plants have been already upgraded while new plants have been constructed, leading to the increase of a the total capacity of all our plants to approximately 220,000 cubic meters of water a day," Cypriot Agricultural Minister Nicos Koyialis told the Cyprus Mail.

Island's President Nicos Anastasiades participated at the ceremony in Limassol Wednesday along with Israeli Energy and Water Minister Sylvan Shalom and other government officials.

The construction cost of the facility was some 50 million euros, a statement issued by Mekorot said.
