Reward of up to $1.3 million offered in Cannes jewel heist

PARIS, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Lloyd's of London says it will pay up to $1.3 million for information leading to the recovery of $136 million worth of jewels stolen from a French resort hotel.

The jewelry, part of an exhibition in the luxury Carlton Hotel in Cannes, was stolen July 28.

The Nice prosecutor's office, which confirmed the value of the gems, said the robber was armed with a semiautomatic pistol and left with them after threatening to shoot the exhibitors and guests, CNN reported. His face was covered by a hat and scarf.

Lloyd's said the first person who provides information "which leads to the recovery of the goods" will receive the reward, The Hollywood Reporter said. Certain unspecified conditions will apply, the insurance company said.

To make reaching company officials easier, Lloyd's set up an email account with the address "[email protected]."

The Carlton Hotel robbery was the largest jewel heist in the history of France. It followed two previous jewel heists during the Cannes Film Festival in May.
