Tourist accidentally damages statue in Florence

FLORENCE, Italy, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- An American tourist in Italy may face charges for accidentally damaging a statue in Florence, officials said.

The tourist, whose name was not reported, accidentally hit a statue inside Florence's Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, damaging a finger, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

Experts were investigating the extent of the damage Monday. Although the tourist apologized for the incident, charges still could be filed.

The incident comes just days after someone drew on the marble facade of the cathedral's 11th-century Baptistry in Florence with permanent black marker.
