ROME, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- A member of the Irish Republican Army arrived in Rome Friday after he was extradited from Senegal to face charges of money laundering in Italy.

Henry James Fitzsimons was arrested in connection with an investigation into allegations an organized crime syndicate used intimidation to gain control of construction of dozens of tourist complexes in southern Italy, the ANSA news agency reported.

A police operation in March resulted in the seizure of nearly $600 million in assets from the 'Ndrangheta crime organization and the issuance of 20 arrest warrants.

Fitzsimons is accused of investing large amounts of money in the development as a way of laundering money for the syndicate's African offshoot.

He served eight years in prison in the United Kingdom for terrorism.
