London police investigating bomb threats via Twitter

LONDON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Police in London said they were investigating bomb threats via Twitter aimed at female journalists at The Guardian, The Independent and Time magazine.

Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman, Independent columnist Grace Dent and Time magazine's Catherine Mayer all reported receiving threats over the social networking site, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Member of Parliament Stella Creasy and feminist activist Caroline Criado-Perez also recently received rape threats on Twitter, which helped spur a petition for the site to do more to stop online abuse.

The bomb threats all indicated bombs had been placed outside the journalists' homes and would explode shortly before midnight.

While not all the threats were deemed credible, police had advised Freeman not to stay at her home overnight, the BBC said.
