LONDON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- British police say they are investigating bomb threats sent to the Twitter accounts of several female journalists, days after two others received rape threats.
After Hadley Freeman of the British newspaper The Guardian received a message Wednesday afternoon a bomb was placed outside her home and would detonate later in the night, she notified police, she said.
Identical messages were received by Grace Dent of newspaper The Independent; Catherine Mayer of Time magazine; Sara Lang, social media manager of a non-profit organization, and Anna Leszkiewicz, editor of an Oxford University student newspaper, the Guardian reported.
No explosions were reported.
The bomb threats came days after Member of Parliament Stella Creasy and feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez received threats of rape via social media. Police investigating allegations of harassment against the two women said they arrested two men, one, 25, in northeast England, the other, 21, in the Manchester area.
Parliament plans to question Twitter executives about complaints they have not done enough to protect social media users from threats of violence.
"Threatening to bomb and rape people is illegal. We need to apply the law in the same way, online, as we do in the real world," Freeman said.
