Bangladeshi court declares Islamist party illegal

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Bangladesh's high court Thursday declared the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party illegal, barring it from the country's upcoming general election.

The court ruling was prompted by a 2009 petition filed by the Bangladesh Tariquat Foundation, a Sufi organization that wants to make Bangladesh a secular nation, CNN reported.

The petition said Jamaat, Bangladesh's largest Islamist party, the party opposes secularism and actively worked to undermine the independence movement during Bangladesh's struggle for independence in the early 1970s.

Since 2010, several of Jamaat's top leaders have been found guilty of war crimes during the nine-month war.
