Museum builds full-scale warship replica

KURE, Japan, July 27 (UPI) -- A full-scale replica of the Japanese World War II warship Yamato has been created and is on display in a naval museum in Kure, Japan.

The ship, which was considered massive and state-of-the-art when it was commissioned shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, saw action in the Battle of Midway and was eventually sunk by American carrier-based bombers in 1945.

Before the waning days of the battle for the Pacific, the Yamato participated in the Battle of Midway. The ship was considered the crown jewel of the Japanese fleet.

The replica includes the ship's 82-foot bridge, The Asahi Shimbun reported Saturday.

The exhibition will be on display at the Yamato Museum in Kure until Jan. 27.
