Turkey prepares for possible series of terror attacks

ANKARA, Turkey, July 26 (UPI) -- Turkish government officials say terror groups may be planning a series of suicide attacks across Turkey, including in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.

Turkey has strengthened security in its border provinces, particularly those that neighbor Syria, to counter possible terrorist attacks by members of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front, known by the acronym DHKP/C, an intelligence source told Today's Zaman.

National police units have been put on high alert over the possible attacks.

Warnings the police sent to security units across Turkey said the DHKP/C is preparing to target headquarters and branch offices of political parties, in particular the branch offices of the Justice and Development Party.

Turkish government officials said the possible attacks originated from the lack of cooperation on the part of the Greek government to extradite suspected terrorists to Turkey and instead transferring them to Syria.

Turkey and Greece have begun working on building a better relationship to combat terror.

"There is a consensus between the two countries on the issue of terrorism. The two countries will work in cooperation against all terrorist organizations," said an official from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
