Vice President Biden meets with India's top political leaders

NEW DELHI, July 23 (UPI) -- Vice President Joe Biden held a series of meetings with India's top political leaders in New Delhi Tuesday before attending a banquet in his honor.

The U.S. vice president is on a mission to convince India Pakistan is not the United States' favorite friend in South Asia, The New York Times reported.

Biden began his visit Monday afternoon with a trip to the memorial for Mohandas K. Gandhi, considered India's founding father.

He wrote a tribute in the site's visitor's book calling Gandhi "one man who changed the world."

Wednesday Biden will be in Mumbai to discuss growing concerns about India's economy with the country's business elite.

Biden is the first U.S. vice president to visit India in nearly 30 years and his trip comes just one month after Secretary of State John Kerry traveled to New Delhi to discuss climate change and diplomacy.

While Biden met with government leaders, his wife, Jill, visited the slum dwellers in Kachchpura near the Taj Mahal to evaluate the Health for Urban Poor program, vunded by USAID. She also spent 45 minutes at the Taj Mahal.
