MOSCOW, July 23 (UPI) -- A Russian lawmaker said Tuesday the birth of the latest member of the British royal family "cannot bring us any kind of happiness."
Vladimir Zhirinovksy, leader of the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party, told journalists he doesn't "care about the heir" because of the harm he said the British monarchy had caused Russia, RIA Novosti reported.
The British monarchy "destroyed our state," he said. "That is why the birth of another British monarch, who will suck our blood somewhere in the mid-21st century, cannot bring us any kind of happiness."
The Russian monarchy, which was toppled in 1917, was related to the British royal family. King George V, an ancestor of Queen Elizabeth and her new grandson, was a first cousin to Russia's Tsar Nicholas II.
In contrast to Zhirinovsky's comments, the Kremlin posted a statement on its website congratulating the British royal family on the as-yet-unnamed new addition.
