Commuters in Japan push train to free trapped woman

SAITAMA, Japan, July 23 (UPI) -- Commuters in Saitama, Japan, summoned super-human strength to push a commuter train off a woman trapped between the train and the platform, officials said.

Takashi Tsukahara, a spokesman for train operator JR East, said the woman was trying exit a train in the city north of Tokyo when she fell into a gap between the train and the platform early Monday, CNN reported.

About 40 passengers and JR staff pushed the train car, moving it just enough to free the woman, who was not seriously injured, Tsukahara said.

The spokesman said a train carriage typically weighs about 30 metric tons, but can sway somewhat side to side to absorb the train's movements.

Tsukahara said the train resumed its schedule 8 minutes later.
