BANFF, Alberta, July 22 (UPI) -- A Calgary man was recovering in a hospital after taking a tumble while climbing Tunnel Mountain in Alberta's Banff National Park, officials said.
The 26-year-old man was scaling the mountain with two friends Sunday afternoon when he slipped and fell about 50 feet, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
"He pulled off a loose hold and that caused him to fall backwards injuring his back and pelvis area," said Lisa Paulson, a Parks Canada visitor safety specialist involved in the rescue.
Two emergency responders climbed to just above where the injured climber was dangling in his harness and prepared a sling so he could be transferred to a helicopter that flew him off the mountain to a waiting ambulance, she said.
"We're fortunate to have some very fantastic pilots that have incredible precision and judgment when flying us into locations on a mountain face," she said.
