KINGSTON, Jamaica, July 21 (UPI) -- Electronic billboards with missing children's information and photos will be set up in the next few months in five Jamaican cities, government officials said.
The goal of the billboards to be placed in Kingston, Montego Bay, Savannna-la-Mar, Spanish Town and Ocho Rios is to help the public identify children immediately after they go missing and better enable the police to find them, the BBC reported Saturday.
Four children disappear in Jamaica every day. Eighty percent of them come home within days or weeks, but the others are never found alive, the BBC reported.
"These billboards should assist the public to see and identify these children quickly and call the Office of the Children's Registry or the nearest police station," said Greig Smith, the office's registrar.
Photos and crucial information about missing children are currently printed and distributed across Jamaica, and some mobile phone providers send the data to their subscribers, the BBC reported.
Jamaican government statistics from June 26 show 1,154 children listed as missing and about 190 are unaccounted for, the BBC said.
