Bombings claim at least 65 lives in Iraq

BAGHDAD, July 21 (UPI) -- A string of bomb and gun attacks in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities Saturday killed at least 65 people, Iran's Press TV reported.

The TV network said a dozen car bombs and a roadside bomb were detonated in commercial areas in Baghdad's predominantly Shiite districts after the breaking of the daily Ramadan fast.

Besides those killed, about 200 others were wounded, Press TV said.

Gunmen also shot and killed a leader of the anti-al-Qaida group Sahwa and two of his bodyguards near Baquba, the capital of Diyala province.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has blamed militant groups and remnants of the ousted Baathist regime the country's deadly violence in recent months, Press TV said, adding Iraqi officials allege there is a foreign-backed plot to foment sectarian strife in the country.
