Turkey calls for explanation over guns

The weapons shipment originated in Turkey and contained blank cartridge guns, the Hurriyet Daily News said.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry released a statement Thursday and instructed its embassy in Cairo to launch an investigation.

"Such claims must be immediately investigated in a most serious and comprehensive way and the truth must be promptly revealed," the statement reads.

Tension between the two countries has increased recently, Today's Zaman said.

Turkey has criticized Egypt's crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood members after the July 3rd military ouster of President Mohamed Morsi, and Egypt has accused Turkey of interfering in its affairs.

"Turkey, which attributes crucial importance to the stability and peace of brotherly Egypt, believes that resorting to violence in this country is totally unacceptable regardless of its purpose and strongly condemns all kinds of violence," Thursday's statement said.
