Broadcaster who backed Assad government shot, killed in Lebanon

SARAFAND, Lebanon, July 17 (UPI) -- A prominent commentator and supporter of Syria's President Bashar Assad was shot and killed outside of his home in southern Lebanon Wednesday, officials said.

Hussein Khalifeh, mayor of Sarafand, where Mohamed Dirrar Jammo was killed, called the attack a "political assassination par excellence," The New York Times reported.

Khalifeh said Jammo returned to his home early Wednesday and was unloading food from his car when the gunmen attacked.

Jammo, who has defended the Syrian government on Lebanese and Arab broadcast outlets, was married and lived in the town for more than 10 years, Khalifeh said.

The attack that killed Jammo followed the detonation of a roadside bomb that struck a convoy of a Lebanese Hezbollah group near the Syrian border Tuesday, the Times said.

No group has claimed responsibility for either attacks, but the Times said the links between the targets and the Syrian government indicated they could have been the work of Syrian rebels or Lebanese militants who sympathize with them.

A Lebanese military official confirmed to the Times Tuesday's bomb attack, saying it struck a Hezbollah convoy bound for Damascus. Two people were wounded.
