TEL AVIV, Israel, July 15 (UPI) -- The Israeli Army downed its own unmanned Hermes 450 drone near the border with Egypt after a technical malfunction was discovered, officials said.
Soldiers decided to perform a controlled crash of the craft Sunday evening.

Parts of the drone were recovered by soldiers, Ynetnews.com reported.
The Hermes 450 aircraft is one of the most advanced of its kind and is used primarily for reconnaissance and the collection of aerial images, Haaretz said.
In May, the army intentionally downed a Heron-class unmanned aerial vehicle called Shoval in the sea near Netanya, the newspaper said.
In January of 2012, a Heron-class drone called Eitan crashed in southern Israel during a test flight, the report said.
