Malian Lt. Elisee Jean Dao, along with a group of about 60 soldiers from Mali, headed the parade, followed by U.N. peacekeepers who served in France's military intervention in Mali.

French President Francois Hollande attended the parade with Malian Interim President Dioncounda Traore and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Hollande was slated to give a speech after the parade.

Other festivities in Paris for Bastille Day included a concert near the Eiffel Tower, and a fireworks display at night.
