Parents of gang rape victim ask for death penalty for minor

NEW DELHI, July 11 (UPI) -- The parents of a woman who died after allegedly being assaulted and gang raped by six men in India asked for the death penalty for the youngest accused.

A Juvenile Justice Board determined Thursday it will issue a judgment against the minor July 25, said Principal Magistrate Geetanjali Goel, who presides over the board.

The minor is accused of some of the "most brutal" acts against the paramedic student who died Dec. 29 after the Dec. 16 attack on a moving bus in New Delhi, Press Trust of India reported. Besides the juvenile, four adult men are also being tried separately for the crime in a fast-track court -- Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur.

A sixth defendant, Ram Singh, died in Tihar Jail March 11. He was found hanged in his cell.

Police said a lawyer for the juvenile defendant told the board Thursday his client was not on the bus the night of the incident, PTI reported.
